Get Moving In January: Walking Your Dog

Yes, January. EVEN IN MICHIGAN? Even in Michigan

Benefits:

  • Improved Cardiovascular Fitness

  • Reduce Blood Pressure & Stress

  • Bond with your Dog

  • Your dog will be less likely to chew, bark, have accidents in the house, and other negative behaviors

  • Enjoy the great outdoors and beauty of the Winter Wonderland

Tips:

*Dress for January with proper non-slip warm footwear, layer your clothing, and use gloves that let you control the leash of the dog but will keep your fingers warm. Make sure your head, ears and neck are covered from any wind.

*Protect your pet’s paws from any rock salt and ice by avoiding those areas or with dog booties, if possible, and/or be sure to check them when you return and remove any chunks from their paws. If it dangerously cold, keep your walks very short until a warmer day. If you can power walk/jog a bit on these short outings it will help to improve your health even in just a few minutes.

*Stay motivated by trying new routes and destinations with interest such as parks, sculpture gardens, areas by water such as rivers and lakes, ice skating rinks, and new dog parks.

*On weekends, get in the car and drive to a new location to start your walk instead of just doing your usual neighborhood walk.

*Contact a friend or family member and schedule a walk on a weekend to catch up. Invite them whether they have a dog to walk or not. Don’t miss a chance for a weekend walk during the daylight!
